Martha was born in 1839 in Haverhill, Suffolk, England.  Martha's father was Thomas Gowers and his mother was Rebecca Farrant.  His paternal grandfather was John Gowers and his paternal grandmother is Rachel Webb. He had nine brothers and five sisters, named James, Thomas, Stephen, David, John, Jabez, Elijah, John, Albert, Sarah, Rachel, Matilda, Martha and Elizabeth.  He is the fourth youngest of the fifteen children.
