Jabez was born in 1835 in Haverhill, Essex, England.1   Jabez's father was Thomas Gowers and his mother was Rebecca Farrant.  His paternal grandfather was John Gowers and his paternal grandmother is Rachel Webb. He had nine brothers and five sisters, named James, Thomas, Stephen, David, John, Elijah, Martha, John, Albert, Sarah, Rachel, Matilda, Martha and Elizabeth.  He was the seventh youngest of the fifteen children.  He died at the age of 81 in April 1916 in Haverhill, Suffolk, , England.
