Elizabeth was born in 1840 in Haverhill, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States.  Elizabeth's father was Thomas Gowers and her mother was Rebecca Farrant.  Her paternal grandfather was John Gowers and her paternal grandmother is Rachel Webb. She had ten brothers and four sisters, named James, Thomas, Stephen, David, John, Jabez, Elijah, Martha, John, Albert, Sarah, Rachel, Matilda and Martha.  She is the third youngest of the fifteen children.
