Elijah was born in 1837 in Haverhill, Suffolk, England.1   Elijah's father was Thomas Gowers and his mother was Rebecca Farrant.  His paternal grandfather was John Gowers and his paternal grandmother is Rachel Webb. He had nine brothers and five sisters, named James, Thomas, Stephen, David, John, Jabez, Martha, John, Albert, Sarah, Rachel, Matilda, Martha and Elizabeth.  He was the sixth youngest of the fifteen children.  He died at the age of 69 in 1906 in Haverhill, Suffolk,England.
