John was born in 1842 in Haverhill, Suffolk, , England.1   John's father was Thomas Gowers and his mother was Rebecca Farrant.  His paternal grandfather was John Gowers and his paternal grandmother is Rachel Webb. He had nine brothers and five sisters, named James, Thomas, Stephen, David, John, Jabez, Elijah, Martha, Albert, Sarah, Rachel, Matilda, Martha and Elizabeth.  He was the second youngest of the fifteen children.  He died at the age of 57 in 1899.
