Matilda was born on February 26th, 1831 in Haverhill, Essex, England.1   Matilda's father was Thomas Gowers and her mother was Rebecca Farrant.  Her paternal grandfather was John Gowers and her paternal grandmother is Rachel Webb. She had ten brothers and four sisters, named James, Thomas, Stephen, David, John, Jabez, Elijah, Martha, John, Albert, Sarah, Rachel, Martha and Elizabeth.  She is the seventh oldest of the fifteen children.
