Joan was born about 1314 in Wigmore, Herefordshire, England.  Joan's father was Earl Roger de Mortimer of March and her mother was Joan de Geneville.  Her paternal grandparents were Baron Edmund de Mortimer and Margaret de Fiennes; her maternal grandparents were Piers de Geneville and Joan Lusignan. She had a brother and four sisters, named Edmund, Maud, Catherine, Blanche and Beatrice.  She is the third youngest of the six children.

‌Joan and James were married in a religious ceremony before June 13th, 1330 in Wigmore, Herefordshire, England.  They had a daughter named Joan.
