Roger was born in 1221 in Cwmaron Castle, Radnorshire, Wales.  Roger's father was Ralph de Mortimer II and his mother was Princess Gladys Dhu ("the Dark", "Ddu") verch Llewelyn.  His paternal grandparents were Lord Roger de Mortimer II of Wigmore and Isabel de Ferrers; his maternal grandparents were Prince Llewelyn Fawr ("the Great") ap Iowerth of Wales and Princess Joan of England. He had two sisters named Maude and Joan.  He was the second oldest of the three children.  He died at the age of 61 on October 27th, 1282 in Kingsland, Herefordshire, England.

‌Roger and Maud were married in a religious ceremony about 1247.  They had a son and a daughter, named Edmund and Isabel.
