Wladyslaw, known as "the Exile", was born in 1105 in Krakâow, Krakâow, Poland.  "the Exile"'s father was King Boleslaw ("Wrymouth", "Crooked Mouth") III of Poland and his mother was Princess Sbislava Svyatopolkovna of Kiev.  His paternal grandparents were Prince Wladyslaw I Herman and Princess Judita I of Bohemia; his maternal grandfather was Prince Svyatapolk Mikhail II of Kiev and his maternal grandmother is concubine. He had a sister named Agnes. He had two half-brothers and three half-sisters, named "the Great", Kazimierez, Richiza, Judyta and Agnieszka.

‌"the Exile" and Agnes were married in a religious ceremony about 1127.  They had a son and a daughter, named Boleslaw and Richeza.
