Ranulph de Gernon 2nd Earl of Chester, Vicomte d'Avranches 
Ranulph de was born in 1099 in Guernon Castle, Normandy, France and his baptism took place in 1116.1 Ranulph de's father was Ranulph III de Meschines 3rd Earl of Chester, Viscount Bayeux and his mother was Countess Lucia Taillebois Countess of Chester. His paternal grandparents were Ranulph II Of Bayeux Vicomte of Bayeux and Maud (Margaret) D' Avranches; his maternal grandparents were Ives (Ivo) de Taillebois , 1st Baron of Kendal and Lucia of Mercia. He had a brother and four sisters, named William De, Adeliza de, Alice Of, Agnes Le and N.N.. He had a half-brother named William de. He died due to poisoned at the age of 54 on December 16th, 1153 in of Chester, Cheshire, England. He was buried in St. Werburgh, Chester, Cheshire, England.1 2 General Notes

During the age of Llywelyn, the most powerful of the Marcher Lords was Rannulf, earl of Chester, and the constant friendship between the prince and the earl was a central factor in the stability of the Gwynedd's eastern border. John -- nephew and heir to Rannulf and great-grandson of David, king of Scots -- married Llywelyn's dau. In a charter from 1146 King Stephen bribed the Earl of Chester to support him by handing over to him Lincoln, Tickhill, the New Castle in Staffordshire (Newcastle-under-Lyme), Belvoir, Rowley, Torksey, Derby, Mansfield, Oswarbec, Blyth and Lancaster, some of them already powerful strategic strongholds. In 1147 Lincoln Castle was back in King Stephen's hands. Ranulf came up with an army to recapture it, but the citizens would not support his cause. His trusted commander was killed outside the north gate (Newport ARch) and the attempt was abandoned. Finally in 1149 an agreement was reach between the king and the earl: Ranulf could keep the castle until certain possessions in Normandy were restored to him, and he would also be given the nearby castle of Tickhill (Yorks). Lincoln Castle would then revert to the crown with the exception of a certain tower, previously fortified by the Countess Lucy, which was to remain in Ranulf's hands.
This agreement, recorded in a charter of 1151, names twotowers in the castle, but does not identify them. There may have been several stone or timber towers at the angles of the curtain walls, and gatehouses were often called towers; but it is generally understood that the twer built by the Countess Lucy was the one at the top of the great motte. This may have been a timber structure, but there is also the possibility that the existing shell-keep, the Lucy Tower, was standing before the countess died in 1136. [Lincoln Castle, p. 23-24]
