He had ten half-brothers and nine half-sisters, named Godfrey FitzRichard of, Geoffroy, Guillaume, Godfrey fitz Richard of Brionne, William I Count of Heimois & d', Guillaume Ier, Guillaume I Hieme of Eu, Ralph de Ivrea, Roger, Richard Fitz Gilbert, Muriella de, Muriella of Normandy, Pappia of, Hawise, Papia, Beatrice, Abbess of Montivilliers, Fredesende\Fredistina, Fredesende of and Frasenda or Frederina of Normandy. He is important in British history because of theasylum he gave in 1013 to his sister Emma's children by Ethelred II theUnready, including the future King Edward the Confessor, when they fledfrom the conquering armies of Svein Forkbeard and Cnut. Although Richardpersonally came to terms with Cnut in 1017, he continued to protectEdward, thereby consolidating the links which were to have such fatefulconsequences in 1066. Richard II, byname RICHARD The GOOD, French RICHARD le BON (d. 1026/27), duke of Normandy (996-1026/27), son of Richard I the Fearless. He held his own against a peasant insurrection, helped Robert II of France against the duchy of Burgundy, and repelled an English attack on the Cotentin Peninsula that was led by the Anglo-Saxon king Ethelred II the Unready.
