Earl of Mercia Leofric III 
Earl of Mercia was born on May 14th, 0968 in Mercia,Warwickshire,England.1 Earl of Mercia's father was Leofwine Earl of Mercia and his mother was Alwara of Mercia. His paternal grandparents are Scalre Scabre Earl of Mercia Edulph and Elfwina of Mercia; his maternal grandfather was Athelstan Mannesson. He had two brothers named Norman and Edwin of Mercia. He was the oldest of the three children. He died at the age of 89 on August 31st, 1057 in Bromley, Staff., Eng.. !Shropshire, February 1039. Earl Leofric of Mercia's brother, Edwin, (Gruffudd ap Llywellyn's old enemy) was leading the English when they were caught off guard by Gruffudd's Welsh attach. Edwin fell in the battle, with many other Mercian nobles and troops. The rout was devastating. [Chronicle of the Royal Family, p. 25]
Leofric was succeeded as earl of Mercia in 1057 by his son Aelfgar, while his grandsons, Edwin and Morcar, were prominent in the drama of 1066. From 1042 onwards it was perhaps only the endless rivalries between Leofric's family and Godwin, Earl of Wessex's, family which prevented them from overwhelming the monarchy itself. Leofric and Siward came to King Edward's aid in 1051 when Godwin launched an open rebellion. [The Norman Achievement, p. 32]
