His paternal grandparents were Ranulph III de Meschines 3rd Earl of Chester, Viscount Bayeux and Countess Lucia Taillebois Countess of Chester; his maternal grandparents were Robert De Caen Earl De Gloucester and Maud Fitz Hamon. He had a brother and four sisters, named Richard de, Maud, Alice de, Johanna de and Beatrice De. He was the youngest of the six children.
