Balaam was born in 1776 in Chatham Co. or Orange Co., North Carolina.1 Balaam's father was Balaam Thompson and his mother was Olive Melton. His paternal grandparents were William Thompson and Hannah Bell. He had three brothers and seven sisters, named William Pharoah, Jeremiah, James, Eleanor, Dorcas, Hannah, Rebecca, Charlotte, Mary and Ruth. He was the fifth oldest of the eleven children. He had three half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Charles, George, Balaam McSwane, Rebecca and Elizabeth.
