His paternal grandparents were Jacob Sherman and Elizabeth Williams; his maternal grandparents were Johan Jurg Huntzinger and Mary Ann. He had five brothers and a sister, named Daniel, Amos, Henry, Peter, Jacob and Mary. He was the oldest of the seven children.
