Her paternal grandparents were Jacob Sherman and Elizabeth Williams. She had six brothers and four sisters, named Nelson, William, John, Moses, Andrew Washington, Edward, Loretta, Vielene, Caroline and Anna. She was the oldest of the eleven children.
