His paternal grandparents were Jacob Sherman and Elizabeth Williams. He had five brothers and five sisters, named William, John, Moses, Andrew Washington, Edward, Catherine, Loretta, Vielene, Caroline and Anna. He was the second oldest of the eleven children.
