Thomas L. was born on January 9th, 1842 in Edgecombe Co. NC. Thomas L.'s father was Reuben Mayo and his mother was Lucinda Best. His paternal grandfather was Frederick Mayo; his maternal grandparents were William Best and Penelope Edmondson. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Frederick A., William A., John, R. Hardy, Martha A., Lydia, Frances, Elizabeth and Sallie Lucinda. He was the fourth oldest of the ten children.-
