Frederick A. was born on July 20th, 1834 in Edgecombe Co. NC. Frederick A.'s father was Reuben Mayo and his mother was Lucinda Best. His paternal grandfather was Frederick Mayo; his maternal grandparents were William Best and Penelope Edmondson. He had four brothers and five sisters, named William A., Thomas L., John, R. Hardy, Martha A., Lydia, Frances, Elizabeth and Sallie Lucinda. He was the oldest of the ten children.-
