Lydia was born on November 13th, 1844 in Edgecombe Co. NC. Lydia's father was Reuben Mayo and her mother was Lucinda Best. Her paternal grandfather was Frederick Mayo; her maternal grandparents were William Best and Penelope Edmondson. She had five brothers and four sisters, named Frederick A., William A., Thomas L., John, R. Hardy, Martha A., Frances, Elizabeth and Sallie Lucinda. She was the fifth oldest of the ten children.-
