James William was born in December 1848 in Kentucky.1   James William's father was Wiley Combest and his mother was Martha Hammond.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel D. Combest and Sarah Dick; his maternal grandparents were John Hammond and Margaret Peggy Wilson. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Thomas Riley, Lewis L., Infant Son, William, Infant Son, Gilla Ann, Patsy M., Eliza M. and Mary C..  He was the fourth oldest of the ten children. He had four half-brothers and a half-sister, named John Wiley, Samuel Josiah, Barton, George and Sarah Jane.1
