In the year 1767, the ship "Earl" arrived at the Port of Charles Town,
South Carolina from Donegal, Ireland. Duncan Ferguson was Master of the
Ship. The "Earl" carried passengers from Ireland to South Carolina who
had been encouraged by the Bounty Act passed by the General Assembly of
the colony in 1761. Immigrants had to possess certificates showing that
they were Protestants and entitled to receive the benefits stipulated in
the Act.
On board the "Earl" were James Wylie, aged 45, his wife Sarah, aged 38,
and their children; Rebecca, 11; Margaret "Peggie", 9; Samuel, 6; and
John, 4. Also Mary McKinney, aged 70 (possibly Sarah's mother)
