From the "Samuel Combest and His Descendants" Book is the following:
Gilla, the second child born to Wiley and Martha Hammond Combest on
11/22/1848, in Kentucky, married Patrick Luther Patterson on 8/24/1865.
The ceremony was performed at the home of Wiley Combest by William Roy.
Patrick Luther Patterson, the son of Benjamin Pierce Patterson of
Kentucky and Martha J. Peck Patterson of Tennessee, was born 8/1/1846 in
Lumpkin County, Georgia. The Patterson family had moved back and forth
between Tennessee and Georgia until Patrick's father, Benjamin, was
conscripted into the army of the Confederacy in 1863. Patrick had already
left home and on 11/1/1862, he lied about his age and joined Captain
Buster's Company, 32nd Regiment of the Kentucky Volunteer Infantry.
Although Benjamin Patterson had lived in the South for nearly twenty
years, his loyalty lay with the North. He was from the Blue Grass State,
the birthplace of Lincoln, and could not bring himself to fight in a war
against his own son. on December 1, 1863, he turned himself in to Union
forces at Benton, Tennessee and was imprisoned at Nashville. He was sent
to Louisville, Kentucky, where he took an oath of allegiance to the Union
and was released on parole on 12/10/1863. His family had already made the
move to Russell County, Kentucky, and he joined them there.
In the early part 1892, Patrick and Gilly Combest Patterson moved to
Collin County, Texas. Patrick's brother Thomas was there, along with his
son Howard M. Patterson and several members of the Combest family. Around
1907, most of the Patterson families moved to Clay County, Texas. Patrick
bought a farm of 160 acres about nineteen miles from Henrietta, Texas. He
wasn't to remain there long as his wife, Gilly, went to homestead land in
Union County, New Mexico Territory with their son Luther. Patrick then
returned to Russell County, Kentucky.
On Sept 18, 1908, Gilla Ann Combest Patterson was granted a divorce from
Patrick Patterson in Union County, New Mexico. One year from the date of
his divorce, on Sept 8, 1909, Patrick married Martha E. Wilkerson in
Liberty, Kentucky. He died on Jan 11, 1925; his will was probated in
Russell County, Kentucky on Feb 10, 1925.
On Sept 23, 1910, Gilla Ann Combest Patterson sent $2,000.00 to Clay
County, Texas, to pay off the note held by J.W. Douthitt on the 160 acres
in that county. She sold the 160 acres in September 1913 to the same J.W.
Douthitt for $3,000.00 cash and a note for $1,000.00 to be paid within
twelve months.
Gilla went to live with her son, Howard, near Petrolia, Texas. Where she
remained until her death February 20, 1922.
