Chastaine Pettus was born on August 8th, 1881 in Beaverdam, Hanover Co., Virginia. Chastaine Pettus' father was George Washington Harris and his mother was Amazela Frances Sims. His maternal grandparents were Pettus Wayles Sims and Sally Thompson Kearsey. He had three brothers and nine sisters, named Solomon King, George William, James Berkley, Ida Irene, Sarah Jane, Arminta Elizabeth, Ann Rose, Mattie Lillian, Cora Elizabeth, Florence Amazella, Laura Mae and Mary Inez. He was the fourth youngest of the thirteen children. He died in St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Richmond, Virginia.-
