David was born on September 26th, 1793 in Barnet, VT.¹ David's father was John Rankin and his mother was Lois Whitcher. His paternal grandparents were James Rankin and Margaret Witherspoon. He had five brothers and six sisters, named John, Asa, Edwin, Henry, Horatio, Marion, Abigail, Lois, Maria, Laura and Sarah. He was the second oldest of the twelve children. He died at the age of 58 on May 28th, 1852 in Haverhill, OH.¹
