Lois was born on May 5th, 1798 in Barnet, VT.1   Lois' father was John Rankin and her mother was Lois Whitcher.  Her paternal grandparents were James Rankin and Margaret Witherspoon. She had six brothers and five sisters, named David, John, Asa, Edwin, Henry, Horatio, Marion, Abigail, Maria, Laura and Sarah.  She was the fourth oldest of the twelve children.
