John was born on July 31st, 1800 in Barnet, VT.¹ John's father was John Rankin and his mother was Lois Whitcher. His paternal grandparents were James Rankin and Margaret Witherspoon. He had five brothers and six sisters, named David, Asa, Edwin, Henry, Horatio, Marion, Abigail, Lois, Maria, Laura and Sarah. He was the fifth oldest of the twelve children.
