Baltus was born in January 1719 and his baptism took place on January 15th, 1719 in Harderwijk.1  Baltus' father was Samuel Baltuszn Schaftenaar and his mother was Harmpje Barentsdr N.N..  His paternal grandparents were Balthasar Schaffner and Margaretha Mueller; his maternal grandparents were Berend Claeszn N.N. and Bijland Gijsbertsdr N.N.. He had three brothers and eight sisters, named Berent, Bijland Samuelszn, Gijsebert, Aaltje, Sijbille, Barentijen, Anna Catharina, Anna Catharina, Stijntje Samuelsdr, Steijntje Samuelsdr and Barentje.  He was the oldest of the twelve children.  He died at the age of 77 in March 1796.  The funeral took place on April 22nd, 1796 in Harderwijk.1 1
