Edwin's father was James Wootley and his mother was Alice Benstead. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Wootley and Eliza Roft; his maternal grandparents were James Benstead and Ann Wisbeach. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Percival, Sydney, Herbert, Maud, Florence, Lily and Winifred. He was the second oldest of the eight children.
