John was born in 1788 in Bottisham, Cambridgeshire and his christening took place there on February 17th, 1788.1 2   John's father was William Benstead and his mother was Elizabeth Gibbon. He had two brothers and a sister, named William, William and Ann.  He was the oldest of the four children.
