William was born in 1794 in Bottisham, Cambridgeshire and his christening took place there on February 23rd, 1794.1 2   William's father was William Benstead and his mother was Elizabeth Gibbon. He had two brothers and a sister, named John, William and Ann.  He was the second youngest of the four children.
