James was born in 1830 in Westley Waterless, Cambridgeshire and his christening took place there on March 7th, 1830.1   James' father was John Benstead and his mother was Catherine Smee.  His paternal grandparents were William Benstead and Elizabeth Gibbon. He had two brothers and eight sisters, named John, Joseph, Ann, Elizabeth, Sarah, Jane, Mary, Katherine, Ellen and Emma.  He was the fifth oldest of the eleven children.
