Ann was born in 1822 in Westley Waterless, Cambridgeshire and her christening took place there on May 26th, 1822.1 2   Ann's father was John Benstead and her mother was Catherine Smee.  Her paternal grandparents were William Benstead and Elizabeth Gibbon. She had three brothers and seven sisters, named James, John, Joseph, Elizabeth, Sarah, Jane, Mary, Katherine, Ellen and Emma.  She was the oldest of the eleven children.
