Emma was born in 1843 in Westley Waterless, Cambridgeshire and her christening took place there on January 29th, 1843.1 2   Emma's father was John Benstead and her mother was Catherine Smee.  Her paternal grandparents were William Benstead and Elizabeth Gibbon. She had three brothers and seven sisters, named James, John, Joseph, Ann, Elizabeth, Sarah, Jane, Mary, Katherine and Ellen.  She was the youngest of the eleven children.
