Ellen was born in 1840 in Westley Waterless, Cambridgeshire and her christening took place there on May 17th, 1840.1 2   Ellen's father was John Benstead and her mother was Catherine Smee.  Her paternal grandparents were William Benstead and Elizabeth Gibbon. She had three brothers and seven sisters, named James, John, Joseph, Ann, Elizabeth, Sarah, Jane, Mary, Katherine and Emma.  She was the second youngest of the eleven children.
