John was born in 1834 in Westley Waterless, Cambridgeshire and his christening took place there on March 30th, 1834.1 2   John's father was John Benstead and his mother was Catherine Smee.  His paternal grandparents were William Benstead and Elizabeth Gibbon. He had two brothers and eight sisters, named James, Joseph, Ann, Elizabeth, Sarah, Jane, Mary, Katherine, Ellen and Emma.  He was the fifth youngest of the eleven children.
