Elizabeth was born in 1824 in Westley Waterless, Cambridgeshire and her christening took place there on April 25th, 1824.1 2   Elizabeth's father was John Benstead and her mother was Catherine Smee.  Her paternal grandparents were William Benstead and Elizabeth Gibbon. She had three brothers and seven sisters, named James, John, Joseph, Ann, Sarah, Jane, Mary, Katherine, Ellen and Emma.  She was the second oldest of the eleven children.
