Thomas was born in 1829 in Kelvedon, Essex and his christening took place there on January 3rd, 1830.1 2   Thomas' father was Thomas Aylen and his mother was Mary Sayers.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Aylen and Mary Riley. He had four brothers and four sisters, named John, James, John, George, Mary, Hannah, Eliza and Harriet.  He was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
