Mary was born in 1825 in Kelvedon, Essex and her christening took place there on May 22nd, 1825.1 2   Mary's father was Thomas Aylen and her mother was Mary Sayers.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Aylen and Mary Riley. She had five brothers and three sisters, named John, James, John, Thomas, George, Hannah, Eliza and Harriet.  She was the third oldest of the nine children.
