James was born in 1823 in Kelvedon, Essex and his christening took place there on April 27th, 1823.1 2   James' father was Thomas Aylen and his mother was Mary Sayers.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Aylen and Mary Riley. He had four brothers and four sisters, named John, John, Thomas, George, Mary, Hannah, Eliza and Harriet.  He was the second oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 65 in March 1888.3
