Harriet was born in 1834 in Kelvedon, Essex.1   Harriet's father was Thomas Aylen and her mother was Mary Sayers.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Aylen and Mary Riley. She had five brothers and three sisters, named John, James, John, Thomas, George, Mary, Hannah and Eliza.  She was the youngest of the nine children.
