John was born in 1827 in Kelvedon, Essex and his christening took place there on September 23rd, 1827.1 2   John's father was Thomas Aylen and his mother was Mary Sayers.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Aylen and Mary Riley. He had four brothers and four sisters, named John, James, Thomas, George, Mary, Hannah, Eliza and Harriet.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
