John's father was Archibald Thomson and his mother was Margaret Girdwood. His paternal grandparents were Archibald Thomson and Alison Smeal. He had seven brothers and a sister, named Archibald, Claud, James, Edward, Andrew, Andrew, Hugh and Jessie. He was the fourth youngest of the nine children. He died at the age of 11 on May 21st, 1848 in Edinburgh.²
