Andrew's father was Archibald Thomson and his mother was Margaret Girdwood. His paternal grandparents were Archibald Thomson and Alison Smeal. He had seven brothers and a sister, named Archibald, Claud, James, Edward, John, Andrew, Hugh and Jessie. He was the third youngest of the nine children. He died at the age of 1 on December 15th, 1839 in Edinburgh.¹
