Edward's father was Archibald Thomson and his mother was Margaret Girdwood. His paternal grandparents were Archibald Thomson and Alison Smeal. He had seven brothers and a sister, named Archibald, Claud, James, John, Andrew, Andrew, Hugh and Jessie. He was the fifth oldest of the nine children. He died at the age of 66 on January 26th, 1901 in Edinburgh. He was buried in Edinburgh.³³
