Archibald's father was Archibald Thomson and his mother was Margaret Girdwood. His paternal grandparents were Archibald Thomson and Alison Smeal. He had seven brothers and a sister, named Claud, James, Edward, John, Andrew, Andrew, Hugh and Jessie. He was the oldest of the nine children. He died due to a medical problem, Brain disease, duration 35 years, senility, at the age of 73 on September 11th, 1900 in Edinburgh. He was buried in Edinburgh.³⁴
