Hugh's father was Archibald Thomson and his mother was Margaret Girdwood. His paternal grandparents were Archibald Thomson and Alison Smeal. He had seven brothers and a sister, named Archibald, Claud, James, Edward, John, Andrew, Andrew and Jessie. He was the youngest of the nine children. He died at the age of 70 on January 11th, 1915 in Edinburgh. The funeral took place on January 14th, 1915 in Edinburgh. He was buried on January 14th, 1915 in Edinburgh.³⁴⁵
