John's father was James Robertson and his mother was Ann McMurran. His paternal grandparents were William Robertson and Elspeth Thomson; his maternal grandparents were Jonathon McMurren and Susan McAllan. He had five brothers and two sisters, named William, David, James, George, Jonathan, Mary and Annie. He was the second oldest of the eight children. He had two half-sisters named Susan and Catharine.
