His paternal grandparents were Ralph De Neville and Alice De Audley; his maternal grandparents were Henry III De Percy and Idonea De Clifford. He had a brother and five sisters, named Thomas, Maud, Alice, Eleanor, Idina and Elizabeth. He was the second youngest of the seven children.
