Thomas was born about 1245 in Tonbridge, Kent, England. Thomas' father was Richard De Clare and his mother was Maud De Lacy. His paternal grandparents were Gilbert De Clare and Isabella Marshall; his maternal grandparents were John De Lacy and Margaret De Quincy. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Gilbert, Bevis, Robert, Benedict, Isabel, Maud, Margaret, Rose Agnes and Eglentina. He was the third oldest of the ten children.
